What’s New in Mental Health Treatment
Mental health care keeps evolving. Beyond therapy and our established programs, researchers are studying newer approaches — including psilocybin therapy and other forms of psychedelic therapy — for people who haven’t found enough relief through more conventional treatments. Here’s a look at where the research stands today.
Who these treatments are for
When conventional treatments haven’t provided enough relief.
People often turn to psilocybin therapy or psychedelic therapy when they’re looking for options beyond traditional therapeutic methods.
Psilocybin or psychedelic therapy might be a fit when:
- You've tried therapy, medication, or one of our structured programs without enough relief
- You've read about this research and want to understand it better
Our team can walk you through what treatment is currently available, and what might be a good fit.
What emerging treatments mean
New mental health approaches we’re watching closely.
Emerging treatment doesn’t mean unproven or experimental — it means these approaches are still being studied in clinical research. The two getting the most attention right now are psilocybin therapy and broader psychedelic therapy (which also includes substances like MDMA). Ketamine-assisted therapy — which The Newly already offers as part of Medically Assisted Therapy — is further along this same path, and is sometimes discussed alongside these newer approaches.

What psychedelic therapy means more broadly
An umbrella term covering multiple approaches.
“Psychedelic therapy” covers psilocybin along with other substances being studied for mental health treatment:
MDMA-assisted psychotherapy
Clinical trials have shown promising results for PTSD symptoms in controlled research settings.
Regulatory review
Most of these treatments are still working through research and regulatory review.
Not yet widely available
These are not yet approved for general use in Canada.
Clinical guidance needed
A conversation with our clinical team can help answer whether these apply to you.
Curious whether this applies to you?
You don’t need to understand all of this to know whether it applies to you — that’s exactly the kind of question a conversation with our clinical team can help answer.
Where this fits at The Newly
How we think about emerging treatments.
The Newly’s approach to care has always been about matching people with the right level and type of support — not defaulting to the newest option because it’s new. We stay informed on the research behind psilocybin and psychedelic therapy so that, if and when it becomes clinically appropriate and accessible for a client, our team can speak to it honestly.
What's currently available:
- Ketamine-assisted therapy, which has a more established evidence base and regulatory pathway
- Available through our Medically Assisted Therapy program
- For clients where it's clinically indicated
We continue to monitor research on psilocybin and other psychedelic therapies as the field develops.

FAQ
Common Questions
Access to psilocybin therapy in Canada is tightly regulated through Health Canada’s Special Access Program. Our team can discuss what’s currently accessible and what other pathways might be a better fit.
Ketamine-assisted therapy has a more established evidence base and regulatory pathway, and is currently available through our Medically Assisted Therapy program where clinically appropriate. Psilocybin is still working through clinical research and regulatory approval.
Psilocybin and other emerging psychedelic therapies remain limited nationwide by Health Canada’s regulatory pathways. Our team can talk you through what’s currently accessible there, including Medically Assisted Therapy, while we continue to monitor the research.
